Testing our ethics in a bad economy

SAN DIEGO—I know what my late mother would have said when the news flashed the other day that the governor of Illinois had been arrested on charges that he tried to sell an appointment to President-elect Barack Obama’s former U.S. Senate seat.

Mom, may she rest in peace, would have said, “I hope he’s not Jewish.”

Well, Governor Rod Blagojevich is not Jewish, so on that point, at least, my mother, Alice Harrison Walters, can rest easy.

But there have been so many scandals involving Jews recently that I fear she has been uneasy in her grave up in the northernmost San Fernando Valley.

A president of Israel, Moshe Katzav, had to resign because of a sex scandal.  Oy! I’m turning over.

Elliot Spitzer, the governor of New York, mom’s home state, had to quit, also because of a sex scandal.  Oy, oy, I’m spinning!

An Israeli prime minister, Ehud Olmert, forced to tender his resignation because of corruption charges. 
Oy! This is making me dizzy.

Federal agents raided  a “kosher” meat packing plant, contending it had treated the animals with cruelty and also exploited its workers, many of them illegal.   Oy! oy! Enough already!  Give a dead woman some peace!

There was some good news for mom, too.  The Conservative Jewish movement now believes that a product cannot be considered kosher unless the people who produce it operate in an ethical manner. 

I’m sure that stand would make my mother very  happy.  Ahh, it’s a machiah.

But as a community, we have a long way to go, I fear. 

Sometimes our desire to do good deeds leads us into the reverse—at least in the field of Jewish fundraising.  There are many wonderful Jewish organizations, all of them in need of charitable contributions, especially so in this plummeting economy.

A time-tested procedure for raising money is a testimonial dinner for a big giver.  Another is to name a building after a major donor.   But what if the person who is giving the money is attempting to purchase undeserved respectability—or credibility—through his or her donation?   Perhaps that person gained his riches through illegal bond trading, drug dealing, or other nefarious activities?

Should we accept the money on the theory that it goes to a good cause, and it’s better that the money should go to the charity than to stay in the mamzer’s  pocket?  My own opinion is no, we should not trade awards for money that is tainted, lest our children come to believe that the Jewish community honors misbehavior, or at the very least, winks at it.

Suppose someone gave money to our community, had a building or program named for him, and then turned out to be a miscreant?  Should we take that person’s name off the building?   Similarly, what if the building is named for a disgraced political figure—say for Katzav or Spitzer?  Should we keep their names up there?

My own feeling is that our Jewish communities throughout the world ought to appoint its most honorable citizens—those known for their wisdom and ethical behavior—to boards of review charged with the responsibility of vetting the names of those who would seek to purchase honors.   

Naïve, too idealistic, I know. But don’t you want your mothers to rest easy?

Ghanaian converts formally to Judaism—
in Uganda—and shares his impressions

Editor's Note: Alex Armah is a leader of the Jewish community in Sefwi Wiawso, Ghana. With the help of Kulanu, an organization devoted to Jews in remote communities, he went to Mbale, Uganda, last July to study Judaism for four months with Rabbi Gershom Sizomu, and was among the 250 converts there. Here are excerpts from some of his weekly messages to friends and supporters reprinted from Kulanu's fall newsletter.

MBALE, Uganda--Shalom. This is my first report to you. It is wonderful to experience such an occasion with the Abayudaya community in Uganda. On Monday visitors started coming from the U.S.A. Some also came fromAfrican countries like Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Ethiopia,and people from nearby communities in Uganda. The guest house was full of rabbis.

The conversions started on Wednesday; the 250 members who came for the conversion are now Jewish, and each person is happy to be a Jew. The conversions were done before the ordination of our African Rabbi Gershom. I was also converted, to have my Hebrew name.

I was surprised to see officials from the Government of Uganda and from Islamic and Christian religions. On Thursday a long bus ofstudents from many Jewish communities from the U.S.A., Canada, and Israel came to welcome our African Jewish Rabbi. African drummers and the Abayudaya high school choir came with their welcome songs for the rabbis.

What I have learned about Rabbi Gershom is that he is a lovely man with the spirit of God, who fears God and is a hard worker towards the service of God. In honor of Rabbi Gershom, I hope all the Jews in Africa will come together as one community.

The rabbis did not come only for the ceremonies, but also to share Torah, Mishna, and religious ideas with the whole community.

The community has done something that is marvelous in the eyes of many people here in Uganda. They have a school that comprises Jews, Muslims, Christians and other students within the district.

The reason why I am here in Uganda is to study and go back to my community and teach. It has been my dream for many years. Studies begin every day after the morning serviceat the synagogue with Rabbi Gershom and some members of the community. And then I have time to study on my own. We have started with Hebrew. On Shabbat, afterthe Sabbath service, we all have our lunch and then come back for studies. I am so happy that we have lunch with the whole community, and that the youth have someone teaching them. The community sometimes divides into two groups, male and female, for study and
after that they all come together for discussions.

I was going around the compound of the community on Friday and I saw some foundations of buildings. I asked about their use and the answer is that they are for the clinic and doctor’s bungalow. I could see that the rabbi has a future vision for the community. Later, I saw the rabbi and some of the community members standing near his house. He called me over and told me a community member had passed away, so we are going to the burial. This is my first time to witness burial of a Jew.

I still praise the community leader Rabbi Gershom for his good work. Is not this the community that was harassed and sent to prison by its neighbors in years past? Now these are the people giving the nearby towns water to drink.

Yesterday was a day to remember the destruction of the Second Temple. So we fasted on Tisha B’Av. And most of the Jewish studentscame from Mbale for the morning service. We all sat on the ground, and only the rabbi sat on a low stool. You could see the faith that people have in this Jewish community.

I was so happy to be called to bless the Torah on Shabbat. Many of the things the Abayudaya community does on Shabbat we also do in Ghana. The big difference is that they know more of the Hebrew so they did all the service in Hebrew. They sing in Luganda and Hebrew. The rabbi translates some prayers into English for those who cannot understand Hebrew or Luganda.

I visited one of J.J.’s coffee farms, behind his house, and it is wonderful work that this man has done. Apart from the coffee, he hasalso planted banana, which is the food all the people here are used to. He earns money from the sale of the bananas His father introduced him to farming in his youth. Can you imagine that this busy man hasalso attached bee-keeping to his farming? I saw something black on top of a tree and he told me it is a bee hive. He has harvested it only once, and got six liters of honey from it. And it is his plan to increase bee-keeping, but he needs capital to start. I met some visitors who came from U.S.A., Canada, and France. The one from France was surprised that there is a Jewish community in Ghana.

Since I came to the community, not a single week goes by that you will not see the leaders of various committees having a meeting in the synagogue or at the library, discussing how to develop the community and how the various projects will help. I am learning from the community leaders and the executive as well. Due to their good work, people are now drinking good water, have good health and have schools as well. When I go back to my community, I am going to work with my leaders to develop our area and move the community forward.

I am learning from the Talmud, the Mishna, and the Torah, as well as Hebrew.Some visitors came to the community and donated sportswear to the high school. They are also helping to construct a football field for the school. The rabbi and the headmaster of the school are now working hard on the field with the contractor.

I am now learning from the Moslems and the Christians in the community how they feel when they are at the Jewish school. I met one of the Christians and he told me that he is happy to be in the school because there is no discrimination there. Now the Jewish peoplehere have created a good relationship with the Christians.

On Thursday, I went to see one of the Torah readers, Isaac, andtold him I wanted to read the Torah on Shabbat. He then encouraged me and he let me practice with him for about 30 minutes. Then he left me alone to study. I kept on reading till Friday night, when I told the rabbi that I wanted to read from the Torah on Shabbat. The rabbi also encouraged me. On Shabbat, the rabbi read the first and the second parts and then called me and blessed me, and the community also sang a song to welcome me, because this was my first time reading from the Torah scroll. And I was able to read my portion. I know by the time I
leave to go back to my community, many things will have changed. I give thanks to my rabbi for giving me encouragement day in and dayout. May the Almighty bless him and give him peace.

Chicken soup is not for my soul

SAN DIEGO—There is an awful truth that I must admit – I am a Jew who hates chicken soup.

It was not always that way. When I was very young I used to sit at the dinner table on the Sabbath and happily ingest our meal which always began with chicken soup.  This was at my grandmother’s house - her chicken soup - and she was a fine cook.  My mother, though her heart and efforts were diligent, was not quite as good a cook as Bubbe.

When I was about six years old, I saw my mother put an entire chicken in a pot of water and it changed me forever.  The sight of that pink pimply skin turning pasty white and streams of yellow grease floating on the surface of the water turned me pasty green.  I informed my mother that I would no longer eat chicken soup.  This spilled over to a lifelong hatred of boiled chicken where the flesh ends up slimy rather than firm.

That was the beginning of a fifteen year battle in which my mother tried every trick she could think of to get me to change my mind.  I spent many evenings sitting for hours over a bowl, crying (whining) and just not able to swallow it.  As the years went by my aversion to chicken soup and boiled chicken got worse.  Eventually I couldn’t even stand the smell of it in the house or refrigerator.  (This became a problem in most kosher restaurants.)  Calling it “stewed” chicken rather than “boiled chicken” didn’t help; different name -same result.

One incident in particular stands out in my memory.  My mother had made boiled chicken and the hated soup.  The house was filled with the smell of it when I came home from high school so I fled to my room, shut the door and settled down to do my homework.  But my sensitive nose could still detect the odor seeping into my room.  I took an old newspaper and tore it in strips and inserted them all around between the closed door and the door frame.  It seemed to work.  With the window open the smell began to dissipate and I happily returned to my homework.

My peace was shattered when suddenly the door opened and there stood my mother.  We looked at each other, me in horror and she in disbelief as the newspaper shreds came ever-so-slowly floating down around her.  How do you explain to your mother that the smell of her cooking has made you nauseous and that’s the reason all those newspaper shreds are floating down around her?

I had to say something.  I considered blaming the weather, but the window was wide open.  And so I honestly explained “It’s the smell of the chicken soup.”  It was the wrong thing to say.  She was really hurt and I can’t say that I blame her.  But, I didn’t make matters any better when I started giggling as she stood in the midst of a mini-snow storm of newspaper strips.

Years later when my son declared his aversion to anything resembling squash or sweet potatoes - I didn’t dare risk finding myself standing in a newspaper snow storm.  Everyone is entitled to dislike some food items.

Yale Strom in Concert, Friday, January 23rd

Strom, is a pioneer among klezmer revivalists in conducting extensive field research in Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans among the Jewish and Rom communities since 1981.

Strom has performed with many world renown musicians including Andy Statman, Mark Dresser, Marty Ehrlich, Mark O’Connor,Alicia Svigals and Salman Ahmad.

Strom is one of the only top composers of Jewish music to carry on the tradition of writing original songs. He has become the world's leading ethnographer-artist of klezmer and history.

He is currently a Resident Artist at San Diego State University.

Registration Opens For Camp Jaycee

Registration Day for the Jewish Community Center day camping program has been scheduled for Monday, June 12, 10:00 to 4:30.  Parents are urged to register their children at that time in order to avoid disappointment.

Heavy pre-registration for “Camp Jaycee” promises a peak enrollment for 1950, according to Irwin J. Wohl, director of the Day Camp. The camp makes provisions for children from the ages of 5 to 12 from June 19 through July 28.

A skilled, competent staff of college graduates and college students has been brought together to supervise and conduct a well-rounded program including swimming instruction, horseback riding, hikes, arts and crafts, dancing, dramatics, trips, etc.  Beautiful Torrey Pines beach and Balboa Park will be the scene of many of the day camp activities.

The Temple Center, Third and Laurel will be the assembly point for the campers. Those parents who will be unable to arrange their own transportation for their youngsters may use the camp pick-up and delivery service

There will be waiting lists set up after the enrollment reaches 80 children.  Rates are moderate and camperships are available in some cases where the parents are unable to pay the full fee.  For additional information and registration application call or write Jewish Community Center, 333 Plaza, F-0171.


News of the Fox

The Samuel I. Fox Lodge meeting of May 23rd was a joint social affair with the San Diego Bay City B’nai B’rith Women’s Chapter. The attendance of the membership of both lodges was very pleasing, with officials of the Pioneer Club and Birdie Stodel Chapter as guests. Refreshments were prepared by the Bay City Women’s Chapter>

President Ernest Green introduced Ralph J. Feldman, guest speaker, who gave a well received talk on A.D.L. work.  His background as National Deputy Intelligence Officer of the Jewish War Veterans, and A.D.L. Chairman of the San Diego Lasker Lodge gave him a wealth of material on which to speak.

A report was made of the plans to have a combined July 1st dance for the B’nai B’rith Lodges of San Diego for both men and women lodges. 

The balance of the business was turned over to President Reva Garvin of the Bay City Chapter.  Short reports were given on their dance which was held May 27th.

The Samuel I. Fox membership picnic of June 4th was enjoyed by all members and guests. Chairman Stanley Yukon is to be commended on a well prepared affair.  Boating, fishing, ball playing and cards were on program, topped off by a delicious meal of barbecued beef.

The next meeting of the Fox Lodge will be held on June 13th.

San Diego Lasker Lodge No. 370 will hold its next regular meeting at 8:00 p.m. at the Temple Center, June 12, 1950.

At the last meeting beautiful trophies were presented to the members of our two winning teams who placed first and second at the annual B’nai B’rith Bowling Tournament recently held in Los Angeles. A large trophy was also presented to our lodge to be kept for a year.

Don’t forget, fellows, this is the year that the grand Lodge Convention is being held in San Diego and we need the support of each and every one of you.  Have you volunteered to do your part?  Ed Breitbard is the overall chairman and he will certainly appreciate all the help we can give him. Time is growing short so don’t delay.
